VIOLA’S ROOM
June 17 through September 15, 2024
The Shed, 545 W 30th St, Hudson Yards
Multiple time slots daily (advance reservations required)
Tickets: $59
Viola’s Room is the latest immersive experience from UK theater innovators Punchdrunk, first staged in London to critical acclaim and now reimagined inside The Shed’s expansive high-tech venue. Like their earlier hits Sleep No More and The Drowned Man, this production breaks down the wall between performer and audience—but here, you’re completely alone. Barefoot, you move through a series of dim, atmospheric rooms, guided by a whispering binaural narration from Helena Bonham Carter. Each space—bedrooms, corridors, dreamlike thresholds—draws you deeper into a story that feels half-memory, half-myth.
WHY GO? Everyone should see a show at the Shed. Sitting at the north end of the High Line in Hudson Yards, it’s part gallery, part stage, part sci-fi movie set, with the back section built on a set of 6-foot wheels that lets the building expand and contract as needed. Viola’s Room takes full advantage of NYC’s most dynamic performance venue.
PHOTOVILLE OPENING WEEKEND
June 7–8, 2025
Brooklyn Bridge Park, DUMBO
Exhibits open daily; evening programming begins at dusk
Free Admission
Photoville returns for its 13th year with its signature pop-up photo village built from shipping containers—each one transformed into a gallery. Opening weekend brings the festival to life with artist talks, hands-on workshops, and family activities spread across the park. As night falls, join a waterfront crowd under the Brooklyn Bridge for “Night of Photojournalism,” featuring powerful projected works and a live multimedia performance by acclaimed photo journalist Tamir Kalifa.
WHY GO? The DUMBO stretch of Brooklyn Bridge Park is pure summer magic—bridges overhead, ferries drifting by, and the city at your feet. Add world-class photography and you’ve got the perfect afternoon (and evening).
SILENT DISCO @ LINCOLN CENTER
June 11 – August 10, 2024
The Dance Floor at Josie Robertson Plaza, Lincoln Center
Wednesdays & Saturdays, 7:00–10:00 pm
Free Admission
Lincoln Center's Summer for the City festival returns with its vibrant Silent Disco series, transforming Josie Robertson Plaza into NYC's largest outdoor dance floor beneath a dazzling 10-foot disco ball.
You’ll don wireless headphones (provided for free by Lincoln Center) and dance to rhythms from every imaginable musical genre—while hundreds of others do the same, each moving to their own rhythm. The series kicks off on June 11 with DJ CherishTheLuv, the first woman to DJ on Broadway, spinning an eclectic mix of R&B, hip-hop, and disco.
WHY GO? Because dancing in a crowd of people wearing headphones under the city sky is oddly euphoric. Come solo, come with friends—just come ready to move.
TROPHY BOYS
June 5–July 13, 2025
MCC Theater, 511 W 52nd St, Manhattan
Evenings and weekend matinees
Tickets from $49
Australian playwright Emmanuelle Mattana brings Trophy Boys—a sharp, subversive new play about power, privilege, and performative progressivism—to MCC Theater for its American premiere. Set inside a high-pressure debate team at an elite boys’ prep school, three students are tasked with defending the premise that “feminism has failed women”—just as scandal erupts. The production is directed by Danya Taymor, fresh off her Tony win for The Outsiders and known for bold, emotionally charged work that pushes boundaries. Tickets are going fast.
WHY GO? Because there’s nothing more exciting than seeing a great Off-Broadway show before it takes flight to Broadway’s bright lights.
RUN DON’T WALK
Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bring two nights of swing and soul to the stunning Rose Theater for a pair of season-closing concerts on June 13 and 14th.
Support homebound elderly New Yorkers at Citymeals on Wheels’ 38th Annual Chefs’ Tribute on June 9 at Cipriani South Street—a walk-around tasting event with top chefs, craft cocktails, and live music.
Culture Lab is a must-visit arts center in a former factory alongside a canal on the vibrant LIC waterfront. This weekend they begin a summer-long, free outdoor concert series.
Join Bronx native urban ecologist Dr. Robert "Birding Bob" DeCandido for engaging (with a hint of NY attitude) bird-watching walks through Central Park's lesser-known areas, welcoming both beginners and seasoned birders. Walks are held multiple times a week at various locations, with a $10 fee per person and optional binocular rentals available for the same price.
On June 11, Larry Campbell and his wife Teresa Williams bring their acclaimed rootsy, heartfelt Americana to City Winery. Campbell is a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist who toured with Bob Dylan for nearly a decade and later served as musical director for Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble concerts, producing Helm’s Grammy-winning albums Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt.
